South Africa is reportedly on the verge of withdrawing from the first half of Rugby Championship in a move that could prompt organisers to include a Barbarians or Australia A team.The Springbooks had until tonight (AEDT) to decide if they will compete in this year’s tournament in Australia vs South Africa Rugby but body SANZAAR has now granted them another 48 hours.
However the Daily Telegraph reports South Africa has indicated privately it doesn’t want to compete in the first three rounds of the six-round tournament, with tournament organisers now considering an alternative team to replace the Springboks until they arrive in Australia.Local opinions have been divided as to whether an inevitably-underprepared squad South African should play, partly to boost the coffers of a national body sorely hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
